There’s a disturbing trend around the British coastline. According to recent news reports, people have started attacking seals for no apparent reason.

It seems like an odd thing to do. A sign of the times, perhaps.

I have fond memories of childhood visits to the Farne Islands off the coast of Northumbria, home to thousands of grey seals and their adorable pure white pups. During summer holidays I would eagerly climb aboard one of the boats which took groups of tourists out to the islands and we would all thrill with excitement as the first seal to be spotted bobbed their head up in the sea not far from the boat.

As we neared the islands, the seals became more numerous until the entire colony became visible, hauled up with their pups on the rocky shore. It was a magical experience, and one I still treasure to this day.

Both common and grey seals are found around much of the British coastline, particularly around Ireland, Scotland and down the east coast of England. They will frequently haul up onto quiet beaches or even harbour steps to rest and recuperate if they’ve been swimming out at sea for some time.
