I must admit, I didn’t know about ‘Insect Thursday’ until today. I saw the hashtag #InsectThursday was trending on Twitter and realised it’s mostly a day where people post photos they’ve taken of various insects.

If you’re not a very insect-y kind of person, you might think it all sounds a bit dull and pointless, but looking through the posts, I realised that some of the stunning photography on display is actually a fantastic way to show people that the insects they usually ignore or, God forbid, swat, poison or crush underfoot, are some of the most incredible, most amazing, most fascinating beings on this planet.

Take this little beetle, for example. If you passed him in the street, or in the garden, you probably wouldn’t notice him at all. If you did, you probably wouldn’t give him a second glance. But get down and up close and you get a whole new perspective filled with breath-taking beauty. Look closely enough for long enough and that sense of beauty turns to awe.
