The staple food in Tibet is Tsampa - made from barley flour - not meat. The typical Western diet probably has more meat in it than the traditional Tibetan diet, so I don't think genetics has that much to do with it. I suspect it was just ignorance, personally... a lot of doctors still don't have that much of an in-depth understanding of nutrition
