VEGANISM
People STILL Think Veganism is a Diet
But being vegan has nothing to do with food preferences
It never ceases to amaze me just how many people still think veganism is a diet, or that it is simply about personal food preferences.
They say things like, “If you don’t like meat, don’t eat it, but don’t force everybody else to follow your diet.”
Another common remark is, “If vegans don’t like meat, why do they make vegan mock meats? If you like bacon so much why not just eat real bacon?”
Such comments completely miss the point. Being vegan has nothing to do with whether we like or dislike the taste of animal flesh.
After advocating for animal rights and veganism for the best part of 40 years, it’s easy for me to forget that these types of comments don’t all come from trolls. Many of them are genuine comments from people who are honestly puzzled by the subject.
I have to remind myself that there is so much misinformation about veganism put out, either deliberately by those with vested interests in animal exploitation, or in genuine ignorance by those who don’t know any better, that it’s hardly surprising so many people find the whole subject confusing.
