One of the problems with psychedelics is their unpredictability. It’s true that they can sometimes jolt one into that state of ‘no-mind’ where one transcends the ego, but they are just as likely (if not more likely) to lead one down a path of illusion. Watching pretty (or terrifying) hallucinations is entertaining and you can read all kinds of weird and wonderful ‘meaning’ into it, but simply swapping one illusion for another is, at best, of limited value and, at worst, leaves you in an even worse position than you were in before. Without the context and guidance of one of the established wisdom-traditions, psychedelics are likely to do more harm than good.
