A bizarre news story has hit the headlines this week. Pig farmers in the UK are distraught that up to 150,000 apparently healthy pigs on farms across the UK may have to be slaughtered because… wait for it… they haven’t been slaughtered already. Yep — you read that right. It’s a cringeworthy display of mindblowing hypocrisy and emotional manipulation but it also appears to be a sign of the impending collapse of the pig meat industry — one of the most cruel and abhorrent industries on the planet today. According to the National Pig Association itself, time is running out for the UK pig farming industry.

‘Pork Industry Crisis’

The ‘crisis’, according to multiple mainstream mouthpieces of the pig farming industry, appears to be a lack of workers willing to slaughter and butcher pigs. The industry claim that this lack of labour is largely due to a combination of Brexit and the Covid pandemic leading to a shortage of Eastern European abattoir workers and butchers across the UK. Farmers say this has led to a ‘backlog’ of pigs on farms awaiting slaughter which is costing farmers more money than they’d budgeted for in pig food.
