Disturbing news as COP 29 takes a huge step in the wrong direction
Disturbing news last week from the 29th annual UN Climate Change Conference in Azerbaijan.
For anyone who doesn’t yet know, COPs are the world’s only multilateral decision-making forum on climate change. They bring together almost every country on Earth to discuss how to mitigate the impending global climate catastrophe.
COPs recognise that every country in the world has a responsibility — and an interest in — helping to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees. As part of this, COP has a stated goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
It’s an ambitious yet necessary target and one that will require a drastic reduction in greenhouse gasses. It will require a radical transition away from fossil fuels and animal agriculture.
There have been a lot of ironic observations over the years about all the private jets used by delegates from all over the world to fly to the climate summit every year. However, you might expect the many food outlets at the conference to be more in line with its stated aims.
