It's heartening to read stories like this which instil faith that it's a friendly universe which has our best interests at heart, and that as long as we do good deeds all will be well for us in the end. However, I can't help wondering why the Universe didn't lead the other eight patients to a miraculous ending. Were they really less deserving than Javier? I see a lot of people who seem to be doing good (or at least not harming anyone) who meet horrible early deaths or suffer terribly throughout their lives, while a lot of others who do so much harm seem to thrive. Is there really any sound proof that those who do good in life are rewarded? And was Javier really any more deserving than any of the others? Sure, he saved the writer's life, but the writer was only there by chance because Javier had set up a business to earn some much-needed cash. Wouldn't any of the other eight patients have done the same in his position, had they been given the chance by a universe that supposedly wants the best for everyone? I don't mean this to sound bitter or cynical, just healthily doubtful and inquisitive.
