There was some fantastic news this week for animal rights… Israel is to become the first country in the world to ban the sale of animal fur after Environment Minister Gila Gamliel signed a decree, due to come into force in six months, to make the fur trade illegal there.

In a statement about the ban, Gamliel said, “The fur industry causes the deaths of hundreds of millions of animals worldwide, and inflicts indescribable cruelty and suffering.” Millions of people around the world welcomed the news, which has set a precedent for other countries to follow.

It’s not before time. The fur trade is abhorrent — mink, rabbits and chinchillas crammed in tiny cages with barely room to move, often mutilating each other (or even themselves) because of the stress of captivity and the unnatural proximity of others of their kind… coyotes, foxes and racoon dogs, legs broken and trapped in cruel steel leg-hold traps, sometimes for days on end, in unimaginable agony and terror… stray or pet dogs and cats taken off the street and bludgeoned to death… all for the sake of fashion.

​And now an entire country has banned the sale of fur, meaning there will be no further financial rewards — and therefore no incentive — for those without morals or mercy prepared to inflict torture on innocent animals in order to make a quick…
