Is It More Expensive to be Vegan?

Are you thinking about going vegan but are put off because you’ve heard it’s too expensive?

That’s a concern I’ve heard a lot over the years.

Many people seem to think that being vegan is only for middle-class or wealthy people and that vegan food costs a small fortune.

White privilege?

“Veganism is a white privilege thing.” Ever heard something along those lines?

It’s amazing how many people assume this is true just because they’ve heard other people say it. It’s like the story of Chicken Licken and the sky falling down — before long everyone believed it just because they’d heard it from someone else.

But let me tell you something. I went vegan 38 years ago when I was 16 years old. Since then I’ve spent time unemployed and on benefits, I’ve spent time as a busker living on tips and barely making enough to get by, I’ve even spent time as a homeless wanderer.

During all that time I was always able to afford to buy vegan food. Do you know why? Because vegan food is among the cheapest food on the planet. Grains…
