Last week, in case you missed it, we had a coronation here in the UK. Some bloke called Charlie claimed some sort of ancient divine right and was officially crowned king.

Despite the image portrayed by the mainstream media, here in Britain we’re not all a nation of fervent royalists and flag-waving supporters of the royal family. Their support comes mainly from people over 65 with a recent poll showing that, among young people, only 36% are in favour of having a monarchy.

Naturally, protests were planned. ‘Not My King’ has become a popular slogan and a group called Republic, who run a campaign to abolish the monarchy, had planned peaceful protests.

But just days before the coronation, draconian new legislation was rushed through Parliament, further clamping down on our already eroded democratic right to protest. Before the coronation had even begun, police had already arrested multiple people, some of them still miles away from the area, on suspicion that they were going to protest.

During the course of the day, 64 protesters were arrested.
