I love your idea of getting people to picture themselves in the future, looking back. It allows them to let go of their present attachments a little bit.
When it comes to minimising our impact on the Earth and other Earthlings, we cannot have zero impact. Just being alive means we do some 'damage' for want of a better word. So, it becomes a question of where we draw our personal line.
Veganism is a different matter. It's a stance against deliberate or conscious exploitation and oppression. We can be against those things absolutely - and we should be. I don't think that conflicts in any way with also trying to minimise our carbon footprint, live in a way that is less likely to cause accidental deaths, etc.
