I Lost Hundreds of Dollars of My Medium Earnings
How to avoid making the same dreadful mistake I made
I just realised I’ve been getting fleeced by a foreign government and I’m pissed off.
Last month I paid $122.89 of my Medium earnings to the US government, despite living in the UK. I assure you it wasn’t out of the goodness of my heart.
This wasn’t a one-off. Every single month for as long as I’ve been part of the Medium Partner Program, Uncle Sam has been taking 30% of my earnings at source.
And I’ve got to admit, it was a little demotivating.
It was hard to swallow but due to Medium being based in the US and me being a foreign citizen, it was unavoidable.
Or so I thought.
Thanks to an article by Orestis Ps. I just realised I shouldn’t have been paying anything.
Turns out the US and the UK have a tax treaty which means UK citizens pay 0% tax at source on US earnings.
Because I’d made a mistake in filling out my tax information in the Medium Partner Program settings, I wasn’t getting the benefit of this tax treaty and was being fleeced every month by the richest regime in the world.
It kind of stings.
