I don't read this implication into Darwin's statement at all. Quite the opposite in fact. To me, what he seems to be saying is that, just as the human mind differentiates us from inanimate 'things' or 'objects', so also does the mind of nonhuman animals, implying that they, too, are 'people' or 'sentient beings' rather than automatons as Descartes asserted
