Giant Asian Murder Hornets

Yesterday, I opened up Microsoft Edge and got sucked in by an MSN news headline reading:

‘Experts issue warning over giant ‘murder hornets’ as insects set to invade the UK’

Now, I’m as partial to a bit of sensationalist drama as the next person, so I clicked on the headline to see what it was all about. It warned of a need for people to be vigilant against an imminent ‘invasion’ by swarms of ‘killer’ hornets.

Scary stuff, no?

There was a photograph which supposedly showed one of the ‘killer’ Asian hornets caught in the Channel Islands in 2019. The caption stated that these Asian hornets are ‘the largest type of hornet in the world’ — which is odd, since a video included in the very same article stated that the Asian hornets are smaller than the native UK species.

Puzzled, I looked further into this. It seems that the Asian ‘invaders’ are, indeed, smaller than native UK hornets. Quite where the writers of this ‘news’ article got their information is a bit of a puzzle.
