Cruelty is another issue. Or, if toy will, another level of the same issue. I'm sure there were human slave owners who treated 'their' slaves 'well' and claimed to abhor those who treated 'their' slaves with cruelty. But that's not really the point. More food rations and longer chains doesn't really address the fundamental issue
