As a young, working class guy in the 1980s with no job and living off benefits (welfare), I was persuaded by a local meditation group (against my better judgement) to be 'given' my own personal 'secret mantra'. Only after I reluctantly agreed did they inform me, as an 'afterthought', that it would cost me £50 (a lot of money back then to someone in my position).

I left shortly after that.
