I was watching a YouTube video in which Alex O’Connor (the atheist formerly known as Cosmic Skeptic) discussed the alleged demise of the ‘New Atheist’ movement with Justin Brierley.

He postulated that the reason the collective voice of the so-called ‘New Atheist’ movement seems to have died in volume lately may not necessarily be due to a demise in the popularity of atheism or an increase in religious belief.

It may be simply that the new atheists have said everything they have to say on the subject. As O’Connor observed, “There’s only so many ways you can say you don’t believe in God”.

How does this apply to veganism?

As I watched this, it struck me that there was a certain parallel between what he was saying and what I’d been feeling about vegan advocacy. We’ve given all the arguments for veganism — philosophical, ethical, scientific, health, environmental.

Some of us have been giving these arguments for decades. Still, people refuse to make the switch to veganism.

To paraphrase O’Connor, there are only so many ways you can say we shouldn’t exploit and oppress other Earthlings.
